Learning About Cows

One of my coworkers who knew I had some experience with the farming Industry had approached me with a question that I thought was really cute. He had asked if all cows have utters? Now I was shocked at first for I did not quite expect that kind of question out of an adult but possibly a child.

Once I had gotten that settled with him that, no not all cows have utters. He had come up with another question. Do all cows have the same black and white spots? Still taken back a little I had explained to him no not all cows have the same fur color.

I then had asked him if he had grown up in town all of his life? His answer was no. He actual lived right down the road from a farm that had cows. So I had to pick on him a little and ask him a few questions to see what he really did know.

Jokingly I asked if he knew where chocolate milk came from just to make sure he did not say from a brown cow, which by the way I actually knew a kid when I was growing up that actually thought this. Of course soon as I asked this question he gave me a wicked smile knowing I was up to something. I then proceed to ask him if he knew the difference between a bull and a steer. His replay was that they are both male cows, but the steer is one you can lead around by the horns.

By now several coworkers have joined into the conversation and most that knew what a steer was had a good laugh and the ones that didn’t know was filled in with a brief description from the ones that did.

Town Girl on The Farm

Being a town girl, I was unfamiliar with many planting terms when I married my farmer husband many years ago. Of particular confusion to me were the terms cultivating(tilling) and combining (the process of removing seeds from field crops). I also often could not remember the names of certain crops such as birdsfoot trefoil( a type of hay) One day a friend of my husband's ,who was also a farmer ,stopped by to see him. Where upon , I proudly told him, he could find my husband in the upper field, cultivating the birdseed. When my husband came home towing the combine behind the tractor,he patiently explained to me why his friend had left the house laughing.
